ORA-12705: Invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified
Either remove the invalid setting from the registry, unset it in the command prompt/shell or fix the alter session statement.
eg:
C:>set NLS_LANG=american_america.unknown C:>sqlplus system@ora920 SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.7.0 - Production Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved. Because you get the message: could not retreive text for ORA- message, this normally indicactes that your ORACLE_HOME was nor configured correctly.
It might be possible that when you fix your Oracle home setting, the error for the Invalid NLS parameter will also disappear:

hi all,
i am trying to connect from oracle 9i client to oracle 10g, and i am recivieng this ora-12705 NLS error.
when i tried to conncet with command promp, it connected without any error but when i am tring to connect using sqlplus it contantly returning this erro.
an early reply will realy be hellpfull, thanks in advance.

Check your setting for the NLS_LANG parameter.
On Linux it is an environment variable, in Windows you need to check your Registry settings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oracle
